A Mother’s Tale.

A journey into our lives as parents of a special needs child

Time is moving too quickly.

I can’t believe its been a couple weeks since I have last posted. Things have been hectic in the Brunetti household per usual. Tyler unfortunately suffered from another bout of the stomach bug. Monday, Tony received a call from the school nurse that Tyler had gotten sick on himself and couldn’t go home on the bus. The not only was a first to be called to the nurses office but a first time throwing up since he was 3 months old. And he continued to get sick all day on Monday. This had us concerned but at 9PM, he was able to keep down 8 oz of Gatorade so we knew he was on the mend. He returned to school today a very happy boy and I guess he had a tremendous day at school! YEAH

Our other big news is we received a notice regarding Kindergarten Orientation coming up on April 15th. My heart stopped when I read it. Could my baby ACTUALLY be heading into Kindergarten?? Seems like just yesterday that we were teaching him to roll over on the floor. I can’t believe that we are about to embark on this journey. Tony and I will attend the open house as the teachers are VERY impressed with his change in behavior since he has been on the Risperidone. They think he will be able to sit in a classroom for a short time to continue to interact with his peers. This is music to my ears!

One happy man..

Sunday night the 3 of us headed into Boston to stay overnight as Tyler had a Botox injection procedure Monday morning at 8AM. We live over an hour, without traffic, from the office and the hotel is right across the street. We stayed last year when he had the same procedure and they gave us a discounted rate since he was a patient. They extended us that same offer again. Now given the fact that Tony is out of work, it was hard to justify spending the money. But the alternatives were to get up super early to avoid traffic, deal with the SNOW that was falling Monday morning, and keep having to tell Tyler “no” when he would request a drink because he now loves to do that. The thought of just getting up, getting dressed, change his diaper and walk across the street was a much better option.

We arrived mid-afternoon Sunday and ordered take out from one of our new favorite restaurants, Rock Bottom. We ordered Tyler grilled chicken tenders and it came with fries. Have you ever seen a happier kid:

Life is a bit normal.

I was just talking with one of my friends who is the mom to micro-preemie twins, and I said how our life feels a bit normal these last couple days, if you can believe that. Ever since Tyler has recovered from the back to back viral infections, he has been eating like a horse. And he has wanted to snack. So it feels so good to buy things like Goldfish crackers and Ritz Bits Sandwiches. I feel like the mom of a toddler. Instead of looking over the snack aisle or enjoying stories that my friends share about snacks, we are there! So even if it takes something as simple as a snack, I welcome the “normal” with open arms :)

Where to start

What a rough few weeks we have had. A couple weeks back, as you recall Tyler wasn’t eating but soon got over it. Well we hit that situation again. Needless to say there were 2 trips to the ER, a trip to GI, and a trip to neuro all to tell us we have an overall healthy kid. They did x-rays, ultrasounds, blood work, urine sample, the whole 9 yards.  GI thought he may have had back to back viral infections and had us wait it out. THANKFULLY, this past Friday, after an increase dose to his Miralax and a small piece of Exlax (as he was constipated) he started to show signs life of his old self again. He cleaned himself out (gross I know) but then he started eating again and laughing and playing. Those sounds have never been appreciated more than they were this weekend. Our little man has returned. Here is hoping the viral infections do not!!!!!

On another note, while we were at neuro on Wednesday they told us the episodes that Tyler is having are not seizures rather than behavioral issues. I am still not 100% on board with that statement but we will be seeing a new neurologist in May so we will re-evaluate this then. Tyler is graduating to a new neurologist now that he is 5. So we can breathe slightly easier knowing those are not seizures but we are CLOSELY monitoring them should they get more intense.
